1. Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Why You Should Visit: Lake Ohrid is truly an undiscovered gem perfect for a budget-friendly European summer vacation. The lake itself is ideal for rest and relaxation, but there’s also lots to do nearby. For relaxation, be sure to go to Sveti Naum or Saint Naum Beach and take a short boat tour of Black Drim’s Spring, a breathtaking spring with the clearest water I’ve ever seen. Restaurant Ostrovo features incredible views of both the spring and the beach.

For some history, head over to The Bay of Bones Museum, where you can explore a replica overwater village of stilt houses dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age. The town of Ohrid is also fun to walk around and offers many excellent restaurants that won’t break the bank.

2. Sarandë, Albania

Why You Should Visit: the Albanian Riviera is Europe’s next up-and-coming summer beach destination. Its clear waters, low prices, and variety of accommodation types make Sarandë a top contender for the best affordable places to visit in Europe. Whether you’re a party animal or beach lover, Sarandë and the surrounding beach towns have it all.

I highly recommend checking out the beach clubs, particularly around southern Sarandë and Ksamil, just south. If you want to explore more of Albania, I rent a car and visit the famous Blue Eye, which is about a 40-minute drive, or head north to Jala and Gjipe for more stunning beaches.

Why You Should Visit: If you want to spend your days gazing out at the glistening Adriatic Sea, look no further than Budva. This city’s perfect blend of history, beautiful beaches, and incredible nightlife scene makes it a top contender year after year for the best underrated European tourist destinations.

For other scenic options, head to the famous nearby Bay of Kotor or the exclusive Sveti Stefan island, both filled with breathtaking architecture and gorgeous natural scenery. I love the wide array of beaches and restaurant options in Budva, and it’s a convenient location to base yourself while visiting Montenegro’s alluring coastline.

Why You Should Visit: You’ve probably heard of the historic city of Salzburg, home to the famous classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the filming location for Sound of Music. But the picturesque mountain region just north of the city is not to be missed, either!

If you’ve ever wanted to escape to the gorgeous Alps, this is the perfect place to go. You can choose to totally relax and disconnect at a lake or indulge in some thrilling hiking or skiing. Our favorite town in the Salzkammergut region is Fuschlsee, but Wolfgangsee and St. Gilgen are also absolutely stunning.

Why You Should Visit: Oh, Aubrac. If you’ve never heard of this place before, it’s probably because it is the least visited region in France! But don’t let that fool you; Aubrac is filled with breathtaking scenery, rolling hills, and beautiful country villages.

For a unique experience, visit in May during Aubrac’s annual transhumance. It’s when the region’s cows leave their winter stables and trek to their spring and summer pastures. The event is marked by a fair and a unique cow parade where they are adorned with flower crowns and other decor.

Visiting Aubrac’s transhumance is one of my favorite memories of living in France. Aside from this event, there are a ton of gorgeous hiking trails, waterfalls, lakes, and beautiful villages to visit.

Why You Should Visit: Nestled on France’s southwestern coast, Hossegor is a dream destination for surf enthusiasts and beach lovers alike. Known as Europe’s surfing capital, it draws visitors from all over the world, especially during the annual World Surf League Quiksilver and Roxy Pro surf competition.

Watching the world’s best surfers ride the Atlantic waves here always brings back memories of home for me — its laid-back vibe and breathtaking coastline remind me so much of Hawaii. But Hossegor isn’t just about the surf. The town boasts stunning beaches, chic boutiques, and a vibrant food scene.

For nature lovers, the nearby pine forests and serene lakes offer a peaceful escape from the energetic shoreline. Whether you’re catching waves or simply soaking up the relaxed atmosphere, Hossegor is a place where adventure meets tranquility.

Why You Should Visit: Marbella, located on Spain’s dazzling Costa del Sol, effortlessly combines luxury and charm, making it a favorite for travelers seeking Mediterranean elegance. Its golden beaches and upscale resorts are perfect for relaxation, but there’s so much more to explore.

The Old Town, or Casco Antiguo, is a maze of narrow streets adorned with whitewashed buildings, colorful flowers, and inviting plazas. It’s the perfect warm escape in the spring while most of the rest of Europe remains chilly.

Best Time to Visit: Late Spring, Early Summer

Where to Stay: Marriott’s Marbella Beach Resort (we have stayed here multiple times and absolutely love it!)

8. Lake Bled, Slovenia

Why You Should Visit: Lake Bled, with its emerald-green waters and iconic island church, feels like it was plucked straight from a storybook. This Slovenian gem offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and serene ambiance. Visitors can row a traditional pletna boat to the island, ring the church bell for good luck, and take in breathtaking views from Bled Castle perched high on a cliff.

There’s plenty to do — hiking around the shoreline, savoring the famous Bled cream cake, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Also, an hour away is Postonja Cave, one of the coolest caves we’ve ever visited! I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.

Why You Should Visit: Kefalonia, the largest of Greece’s Ionian Islands, is a paradise for beach lovers. Its coastline is dotted with some of the most stunning beaches in the world, including the iconic Myrtos Beach with its dazzling turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs.

One of the island’s most magical attractions is Melissani Cave, a partially submerged cavern where sunlight illuminates the crystal-clear water, which you can explore on a guided row boat tour.

Renting a boat is a must-do in Kefalonia, giving you the freedom to explore hidden coves and unspoiled beaches at your own pace. You can even venture to the nearby island of Ithaca, the legendary home of Odysseus. However, one of my favorite parts of Kefalonia was our incredible vacation rental, which I’ve linked below. Check it out to see why we want to go back!

10. Matera, Italy

Why You Should Visit: Matera is a city like no other, known for its ancient cave dwellings, or sassi that date back thousands of years. Walking through the labyrinth of stone-carved homes and churches (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) feels like stepping into another era – not surprising since Matera is the world’s third-oldest continuously inhabited city.

Today, many of these caves have been transformed into unique hotels, restaurants, and art galleries, blending history with modern times. The city’s charm extends to its rich culinary scene, where you can savor traditional dishes like handmade orecchiette pasta and rustic bread baked in ancient ovens. Be sure to rent a car to explore more of southern Italy, like the enchanting city of Alberobello and the gorgeous beaches of Polignano al Mare.
