1. Strasbourg, France

No “best Christmas markets to visit” list would be complete without Strasbourg — Europe’s capital of Christmas! Strasbourg’s Christmas Market, one of Europe’s oldest, is a magical experience transforming the city into a “Capital of Christmas” every winter.

Set against the stunning Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral, the main market boasts hundreds of stalls selling handcrafted decorations, gifts, and Alsatian specialties. As you wander through the cobbled streets, you’ll find the atmosphere filled with carolers, twinkling lights, and the cozy scent of mulled wine.

Visitors to the Strasbourg Christmas Market can enjoy a range of holiday-themed activities. From ice skating under a canopy of lights to browsing charming displays of regional delicacies, there’s something for everyone. Strasbourg’s Petit France neighborhood is one of my favorite spots to wander during Christmas. The gorgeous half-timbered houses draped with decorations make a fantastic photo spot!

Be sure to taste local treats like bridle (Alsatian Christmas cookies) and the most delicious French Christmas market delicacy – a raclette hot dog! This is sausage, either in a baguette or hot dog bun, topped with delicious melty cheese straight from the cheese wheel.

Whether visiting for shopping or simply to soak in the festive charm, Strasbourg’s Christmas Market offers an unforgettable holiday experience.

Where to Stay in Strasbourg

We loved the VOCO Strasbourg for its convenient location and modern design, but our view at the Aloft Strasbourg Etoile was absolutely unbeatable. The floor-to-ceiling windows allowed us to take in the gorgeous views of the Strasbourg Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Colmar, France

The Colmar Christmas Market is a fairytale destination known for its picturesque half-timbered houses and enchanting holiday lights that illuminate the medieval town. It’s just a short drive or train ride from Strasbourg. This city is a lot like Strasbourg but on a much smaller scale. If you love the “Capital of Christmas” but are looking for somewhere a bit more lowkey, Colmar is for you!

Spread across several areas, the market feels like a cozy village of its own, with charming stalls offering artisan crafts, festive decorations, and handmade toys. Each market location has its unique ambiance, making the experience of wandering through Colmar’s cobbled streets even more delightful.

At Colmar’s Christmas Market, visitors can enjoy special experiences like wine tastings featuring the region’s renowned Alsace wines. There’s plenty to indulge in with Alsatian treats like gingerbread, foie gras, and traditional spiced bread, adding a delicious touch to the festive atmosphere. Live music, choirs, and beautifully lit canals complete the enchanting market experience.

One of Colmar’s unique features is the “Children’s Market” area, dedicated to younger visitors with activities like crafts workshops and Christmas storytelling. Colmar’s commitment to celebrating holiday traditions with an intimate, family-friendly atmosphere sets it apart from larger markets. The entire town feels transformed into a magical winter wonderland, making it a memorable destination for families and couples alike.

Where to Stay in Colmar

We took a day trip to Colmar from Strasbourg, so we didn’t stay the night. However, if you want to be in the middle of all the action, I recommend La Maison des Têtes, located in the heart of the old town.

3. Annecy, France

Annecy Christmas Market on a bright, sunny day – Photos by Brittney Liu

Known as the “Venice of the Alps” for its charming canals, Annecy transforms into a festive wonderland with illuminated chalets, local artisan crafts, and Alpine-inspired decorations. The market spreads through the old town, with lights reflecting on the water, creating a truly magical setting.

Visitors can explore stalls offering a variety of regional delights, from savory raclette and fondue to sweet treats like tartiflette and hot chocolate. When we were there, food stalls offered everything from sweet poffertjes (Dutch mini pancakes) to delectable truffle aligot (a French version of mashed potatoes and cheese). The mix of the lively atmosphere and panoramic views of the lake and mountains is perfect for nature lovers who enjoy the holiday season.

With its picturesque setting and festive spirit, the Annecy Christmas Market is ideal for anyone seeking a cozy Alpine holiday escape. Whether you’re there for shopping or simply to enjoy the ambiance, Annecy offers a memorable and uniquely charming Christmas experience.

Where to Stay in Annecy

Annecy’s old town is incredible, but good hotels are hard to find. If you want to splurge, stay at the stunning Impérial Palace hotel. Otherwise, I recommend looking for a cozy Airbnb or VRBO vacation rental instead.

4. Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe! – Photos by Brittney Liu

The Nuremberg Christmas Market, or Christkindlesmarkt, is one of Germany’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets, dating back to the 16th century. Set in the historic main square, the market glows with traditional wooden stalls adorned in red and white cloth, offering an authentic Bavarian holiday experience. Towered over by the iconic Church of Our Lady, this market’s charm is its deep-rooted traditions and enchanting, old-world atmosphere.

At the Nuremberg Christmas Market, visitors can savor holiday specialties like the famous Nuremberg sausages, lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread), and glühwein (mulled wine). I was completely overwhelmed (in the best way) by the endless rows of market stalls offering everything and anything you can imagine. Music fills the air, with performances by brass bands and choirs creating a festive, communal vibe.

One unique aspect of the Nuremberg market is the annual Christkind ceremony, where a young woman dressed as the “Christkind” opens the market with a prologue. This tradition and strict quality rules for vendors that ensure only authentic handmade goods are sold keep the market rooted in local culture.

From its famous treats to its cozy, historical setting, the Nuremberg Christmas Market is a must-visit for those seeking a truly traditional German Christmas experience. Aside from the Christmas market, don’t skip visiting the stunning Imperial Castle of Nuremberg.

Where to Stay in Nuremberg

We enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Carlton Nuremberg. It’s within easy walking distance of the old town and most Christmas festivities. This hotel also features a lovely rooftop indoor pool and spa area, which was awesome to warm up in after a long day out in the cold.

5. Munich, Germany

Can you tell I love collecting Christmas market mugs? – Photos by Brittney Liu

The Munich Christmas Market, set in Marienplatz against the backdrop of the stunning Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus, is a quintessential holiday destination. The market dates back to the 14th century and features a large, beautifully decorated Christmas tree and charming wooden stalls filled with handcrafted gifts, Bavarian ornaments, and seasonal treats.

Visitors can enjoy Bavarian holiday specialties like bratwurst, roasted chestnuts, and glühwein, perfect for warming up in the crisp winter air. If you’re like me and love to collect Christmas market mugs, be warned: there are soooo many options at the Munich Christmas Market. I ended up going home with four mugs just from Munich!

Traditional music performances and the nearby Kripperlmarkt, a nativity-themed market area, add to the rich cultural experience. I loved seeing the creativity and unique materials used in making these various nativity scenes. From traditional crafts to festive treats, Munich’s market is a perfect blend of history and holiday cheer.

Where to Stay in Munich

Marienplatz is centrally located within Munich, and the city is very well-connected by the public transportation system, so getting to the Christmas market is easy from anywhere in the city. Our favorite spot is the Westin Grand Munich, near Munich’s beautiful English Gardens.

The Salzburg Christmas Market is a timeless holiday experience set in the historic Cathedral Square, surrounded by Salzburg’s baroque architecture and the towering Hohensalzburg Fortress. This lovely city’s Christmas market dates all the way back to the 15th century.

Daily events, including live brass band performances and angelic choir concerts, allows visitors to experience Salzburg’s festive spirit everyday. The market also offers a variety of local crafts and handmade ornaments, making it a great place to pick up unique gifts.

A unique feature of the Salzburg Christmas Market is the traditional Perchtenläufe procession, where locals dress as mystical, masked creatures to ward off winter spirits—a nod to Alpine folklore. This event, along with the market’s focus on local traditions and music, makes it a truly immersive cultural experience.

With its enchanting ambiance and rich heritage, the Salzburg Christmas Market is a perfect destination for those seeking a cozy, storybook holiday. Along with Salzburg, I also recommend visiting the Christmas markets of the lakeside villages in the Salzkammergut region. We especially enjoyed St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang.

The Vienna Christmas Market, especially the famous one at Rathausplatz, is a magical holiday destination set against the grandeur of Vienna’s Gothic city hall. With origins dating back to the Middle Ages, this market has grown into a stunning spectacle with over 150 stalls offering festive gifts, handcrafted decorations, and culinary treats. Another fantastic Christmas market in Vienna is on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. The palace grounds are absolutely gorgeous and lined with many food and beverage stalls. I highly recommend getting some hot punch or mulled wine to enjoy while strolling through the palace’s beautiful gardens.

The InterContinental Wien is gorgeous and centrally located. It offers an excellent buffet breakfast and a lovely Christmas setup in the lobby bar area. From this hotel, you can easily reach all of Vienna’s attractions by walking or using public transportation.

The Budapest Christmas Market, especially at Vörösmarty Square, is a festive showcase of Hungarian culture set in the heart of the city. Known for its cozy yet lively atmosphere, this market features wooden stalls filled with unique, handmade crafts and local holiday treats.

Budapest had some of our favorite food stalls of all the Christmas markets we’ve been to. These included traditional chimney cakes (a personal fave), hearty Hungarian goulash in bread bowls, and an assortment of fire-grilled meats and vegetables.

Live performances, including folk dancing and traditional music, bring extra cheer, making the market a truly immersive cultural experience. An ice skating rink nearby and festive light displays add to the joyful holiday spirit.

A unique feature of the Budapest Christmas Market is the interactive light show projected onto the historic Gerbeaud Café, telling holiday-themed stories in vibrant colors. With its blend of traditional flavors, rich culture, and seasonal charm, Budapest’s Christmas Market is a delightful winter destination in Eastern Europe.

Winter Wonderland in London’s Hyde Park is a dazzling holiday extravaganza known for its lively atmosphere and variety of attractions. Unlike traditional Christmas markets, it features thrilling rides, an expansive ice rink, and world-class entertainment, making it one of Europe’s largest holiday events.

Visitors can explore an array of themed areas, including the charming Bavarian Village with its festive market stalls, beer halls, and live music. Indulge in holiday treats like roasted chestnuts, churros, and traditional bratwurst, or sip on hot wine while browsing handcrafted gifts and ornaments. London is a huge city, and as such, offers a variety of accommodations to suit every visitor’s needs. We’ve stayed all over the city, but if you want to be close to Hyde Park and Winter Wonderland, the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane is a fantastic option. But, no matter where you stay, you can always easily get around on the “Tube”.
